What Are Cotton, Modal and Bamboo Fabrics?
Before comparing them, it helps to know what you’re actually wearing. Cotton, modal and bamboo can all make comfortable underwear, but they’re very different fibers.
Cotton
Cotton is a natural fiber and one of the most widely used materials in underwear. It’s breathable, familiar and absorbent, which is why it has been the default for so long.

But “modal” is a category, not a guarantee of quality. The source of the fiber and how it’s manufactured matter.

But it’s worth looking beyond the word “bamboo.” The plant may grow quickly, but turning bamboo into viscose requires significant processing, and the FTC has taken action against companies making misleading environmental claims about bamboo textiles.
Basically, a plant sounding sustainable and a finished fabric being sustainable are not automatically the same thing.

The fabric that wins on paper doesn’t matter much if you don’t want to wear it. For underwear, we’d look at five things: how it feels, how it handles moisture, how it holds up, how it feels against sensitive skin and how transparent the sourcing actually is.
Softness
Cotton can be very soft, especially when it’s new, but the feel can change with repeated washing depending on the quality and construction of the fabric.
Bamboo viscose is also known for its silky feel, which is one of its biggest selling points.
